This poem is about the sacrifice (the Atonement) for all of us: God Would Have Me Be The sun down makes it hard to see, But I can make out a person kneeling by a tree. I see Him crying, I see Him quiver, Watching Him there alone makes me shiver. I hear His plea in between losses of breath, But what love I feel deep inside my breast. His body red from bloody sweat, He is suffering there to pay my debt. Can I go and help Him stand? Please bid me run and lend to Him a hand. But something lightly, steadily holds me back, For what He is doing is what I lack. My way to Him is through this very will, Though watching Him bleed is making me ill. Could not I lend to Him a helping hand? Or would I be subject to Heaven's reprimand? Is this the will of God to have one suffer? I do not believe I can take this any longer. But to my surprise I beheld a light, A glowing angel enters my sight. He kneels by Him though pain persists, A sing from God that He exists. This Son of Man so seemingly alone, Sees my sin and for me will atone. Though of myself imperfect is what I see, I now know the kind of person God would have me be.
